Failure to complete the required training will result in significant delays which often includes newly signed paperwork.

New York best interests standard

New York revised Reg. 187 to place new requirements on insurance producers related to New York’s “Best Interest” standard. The “Best Interest” standard expands the existing suitability criteria and requires agents, resident and non-resident, to act in the best interest of the customer when recommending transactions, with attention to given to whether the sale meets the financial and insurance needs of the customer.

All insurance producers conducting New York Annuity sales after Aug. 1, 2019, or New York Life sales after Feb. 1, 2020, must complete a NY Reg. 187 suitability course. Compliance with this requirement can be met in several ways.

The regulation also applies additional training requirements that must be completed prior to making a recommendation regarding life products.

Every carrier requires the Best Interest Training to be completed. Below are confirmed providers for each carrier. If a provider isn’t listed, please contact the carrier.

Some carriers require an additional Reg 187 product specific training. This product training needs to be completed prior to submitting business.

NY DFS Reg 187 requirements are published by the New York Department of Financial Services. A Griffin summary sheet is being prepared to replace the previous provider’s cheatsheet.
